Arlington’s Environmental Sustainability Profile [PDF, 5.6 MiB, Jun 2016]. Main presentation for Environmental Sustainability Profile as presented by multiple members of Arlington County staff on water resources, solid waste, air quality, and energy begins at 17:50 of this video. This is a fitting presentation to close out our 100 years of history as the Arlington County Civic Federation was formed to bring public water and sewage to Arlington County.
Representatives from the County’s Office of Sustainability and Environmental Management appearing in the video include: Jeff Harn, Chief of the Office; Joan Kelsch, Green Buildings Program Manager; Richard Dooley, Community Energy Coordinator; Aileen Winquist, Watershed Outreach Program Manager; Mary Strawn, Water Pollution Control Plant; and Shani Kruljac, Solid Waste Bureau. The panel discussed challenges and progress in achieving environmental sustainability in the program areas of solid waste, storm water management, wastewater treatment, and energy conservation. Given Arlington’s projected growth over the next 25 years (from 216,000 residents to more than 280,000), limited land area, and increasingly stringent regulations, environmental issues will continue to present major technical and budgetary challenges.
