Resolution of the Arlington County Civic Federation
On Proposed Arlington Marathon
Adopted on December 2, 2003
Whereas, Arlington Sports Division and Parks Division are currently considering a proposal by Arlington Co. Running Club for an Arlington Marathon (currently proposed for Sunday, May 2, 2004, to start and finish at Gateway Park in Rosslyn); and
Whereas, Arlington Sports Division and Arlington Parks Division have asked Arlington Co. Running Club to ask for endorsement from Arlington County Civic Federation, in advance of the next meeting of Arlington Police Special Events Work Group on December 5; and
Whereas, the proposed event invites participation all along the course from Arlington's neighborhoods; and offers a unique opportunity to showcase our County's parks and neighborhoods and to bring many out-of-town visitors to Arlington's
hotels, restaurants, and shops; and
Whereas, the proposed event is a benefit for 9/11 Scholarship Fund, Arlington Public Schools music and athletic programs, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and Special Olympics, all benefiting Arlington's children; and
Whereas, Arlington Co. Running Club has conducted safe, successful events in
the County since 1989; and
Whereas, Arlington Co. Running Club proposes a modest-scale, limited-scope 500-person marathon to start and finish at Gateway Park on Sunday, May 2, 2004, at 8:00 am, subject to approval by Arlington Parks, Arlington Police, and other agencies; and
Whereas, the proposed event will pay for itself entirely, with no expenditures from tax dollars; and
Whereas, the proposed event has received endorsements from many organizations
including Arlington Chamber of Commerce, Arlington County Taxpayers Alliance, Buck & Associates, Chesapeake Bay Running Club, Congressman Jim Moran, Greater Washington Board of Trade Regional Sports Alliance, Marriott Corporation, Potomac Valley Track Club, and Washington Running Club; therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED THAT
Arlington County Civic Federation endorses Arlington Co. Running Club's proposed Arlington Marathon, subject to approval by government agencies, and will write letters as necessary to express that endorsement; and the course design will not hinder traffic into and out of North Highlands neighborhood.
