ACCF Delegates College

Special Summer Session Meeting
Tuesday, August 3, 2004, 7:30pm

Hazel Conference Center, Virginia Hospital
Center-Arlington 1701 North George Mason Drive
(Map)

Message from the President

For the last few years, the ACCF has made a special effort to reach out to our community and attract new organizations and delegates to the ACCF. We are hosting this special summer session meeting to provide our current members with "best practices" and to reach out to our community and prospective members and neighborhoods. During this meeting our most experienced members and guests will give practical information an examples of the valuable services that ACCF provides to members:

  • How ACCF can help you stay informed on topics that may affect you and your neighborhood;
  • How to be effective with the county on items of interest or concern (e.g., taxes, traffic calming, development, schools, etc.);
  • How to work collaboratively with other groups and civic associations for the common good (e.g. emergency preparedness, food drives, scholarships, etc.); and
  • Your organization's role in emergency preparedness and response.

For new organizational officers and those who want to run more effective groups, we will be discussing:

  • How to develop by-laws;
  • How to conduct effective meetings and special events;
  • How to communicate effectively with members
  • How to recruit officers; and
  • How to build membership and how to include diverse groups from your community

All in all this should prove to be an event that you and members of your community should attend. And if you know those in your community you would like to be able to do more in these areas please invite them to attend.

Looking forward to seeing you!!

Patrick Smaldore

A Holistic Approach to Safe Communities

Robert Griffin, Director of Emergency Management

Thank you for this opportunity to introduce myself to you and to come talk with you August 3 on my thoughts about emergency preparedness.

Based on more than 15 years experience in both municipal government management and emergency management, I understand that building a safe community requires broad-based planning that goes beyond the emergency response. I am committed to a holistic approach to developing safe communities.

The 9/11 terrorist attacks, the incidents of Anthrax and Ricin, events such as Hurricane Isabel and the power-grid failures emphasize the need to be prepared for all kinds of emergencies. The leadership of the Civic Federation, including each and every delegate, is critical in helping each citizen to be part of a community-wide effort to better prepare, handle, and recover from crises - steps that are essential to forming safe communities.

Although true preparedness remains an individual responsibility; only by every person being informed, making a plan with family and friends, and getting involved will we begin to build a strong community-wide capacity to handle emergencies. Prepared individuals, working in collaboration with each other, build prepared communities.

I applaud the leadership of Arlington's Civic Federation, the Citizen Corps Council, and the Office of Emergency Management in beginning to build the foundation of preparedness in our community. The Door-to-Door campaign and the multi-tiered systems for emergency notification are good examples of how, together, emergency management and neighborhood leaders can touch every household in a community.

I look forward to working with the Civic Federation and meeting with each of you August 3 as we work together to build a safer and more resilient Arlington, neighborhood by neighborhood."
